The trench is the most useful coat you can own. Wear it open over jeans and a white tee for the weekend, belted over a dress for dinner, or over a fine knit and tailored trousers for the office.
On cooler days, layer a hoodie underneath and let the hood sit over the collar. And when it rains, button it up, raise the collar and turn the cuffs down. It was made for exactly that.
The belted dress look is my favourite.
